The best porcelain tiles to stock in the Netherlands in 2027 are a short core of standard sizes plus one large format: start with the 600×600mm porcelain collection and the 600×1200mm porcelain collection, and add the 800×1600mm large-format collection for premium jobs. Keep the range narrow until repeat orders prove a size earns its place.
That advice runs against the instinct of a new porcelain tile distributor in the Netherlands, which is to offer every size a supplier can make. Three things make a narrow range the safer start. Dutch new-build demand arrives in lumps, held back by permits and grid capacity. Once you import direct, every product you add is another file you must keep. And because Wolf loads one tile size per 20ft container, every extra size is another container.
This guide works through all three, then sets out a starting range built one 20ft per size.
Dutch housing demand is real, but it does not arrive on schedule. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) figures show the gap:
Compared with Q1 2025, permits in Q1 2026 were 4,700 higher and completions 1,800 lower. Permits keep running ahead of homes actually finished. Grid operators also report connection applications for about 600,000 homes over the next three years, with no room for nearly half of them (Netbeheer Nederland, 18 September 2026). When a batch of projects does start, orders arrive together. The timing of that demand is uncertain, and nothing in the data says when the gap closes.
For a distributor, lumpy demand means stock turns unevenly. A size that sells out in one quarter can sit through the next. A wide range spreads that risk across more products, each of which may wait months for its next project. Trade terms are a separate question; see what the India-EU FTA changes for tile buyers for duty.
When you import direct, you become the importer of record, and you must hold a product file for every product you place on the Dutch market: a declaration of performance, CE marking details, test reports and batch records. A second finish of the same size is a second product, with its own file.
A simple planning aid shows how fast this grows:
Product files to maintain = sizes in the range × product lines per size
Three sizes in two finishes each means six product files before the first container lands. Six sizes in three finishes means eighteen. The formula is a planning aid, not a Wolf figure, but it makes the case for a tight range.
A new size also adds a container. Each 20ft carries one tile size, so a second size is a second shipment and a second file at the same time. Our Netherlands compliance checklist, what each extra size adds to your importer file sets out what each extra size adds to your importer file.
A first direct range works best with two or three sizes, each in its own 20ft container, and three or four designs in that size. A typical tegelgroothandel (tile wholesaler) building a first direct range might start like this:

The tile range for Dutch new-build should start with the first three rows. The fourth waits for a demand signal, such as repeat commercial enquiries asking for it by name.
Before you order, Wolf shares an approximate m² per 20ft for your chosen sizes, close to the final figure. The exact m² is stated in the loading document, because it depends on how the container is loaded and on tile thickness. For what a 20ft costs to land, see the landed-cost stack for one 20ft into Rotterdam.

The Dutch climate decides a lot of finish choices. Winters bring regular frost and thaw, and rain carries water indoors on shoes through most of the year. Each finish below is tied to a job, and each one asks the supplier for its own evidence.

Every finish you add is another product file, so the formula above applies to finishes as much as to sizes. Start with matte and one textured finish, and add outdoor-rated only when terrace and garden work is a real part of your trade. Wolf offers all four finishes in 600×600, 600×1200 and 800×1600, so any of them can be added in any of those three sizes.
Large format porcelain tiles in the Netherlands tend to suit renovation and premium jobs, where fewer joints and a larger look justify the extra handling. That makes 800×1600mm a sensible third size, not a first one, for most distributors. For the design case for larger sizes in Dutch homes, see our guide to large-format porcelain for Dutch homes.
Before a new size goes into your range, ask three things:
It also helps to understand how a 20ft container is loaded before you decide how many sizes to start with.
Wolf loads at Mundra Port, with one tile size per 20ft container and three or four designs in that size.Wolf supplies the declaration of performance, CE marking details and test reports for each size and finish in your starting range. Ask for them when you request a quote and Export Sales will send them.
When a distributor later wants a range under its own name, Wolf also offers private-label porcelain tiles for your own range, and Export Sales can confirm the minimum order. You can request a sample set before your first order for the two or three sizes in your starting range. Samples take about 15 days to reach you, depending on your location.

Start with a few sizes that serve both new-build and renovation: 600×600 and 600×1200 for general floors and walls, plus one large-format size such as 800×1600 for premium jobs. Add a size only when repeat orders justify it, because each product needs its own compliance file.
Demand is large but uneven. The Netherlands recorded 86.0 thousand permits and 69.2 thousand completions in 2025 (provisional, CBS), and the government's goal is 100 thousand new homes a year. Grid congestion and permit delays hold building back, so the timing of demand is uncertain.
Fewer than most distributors expect. A tight range turns faster and keeps each shipment sensible. Each extra product adds a declaration of performance, test reports and batch records to maintain, and each extra size is another container. Add a size only after repeat enquiries show real demand, not because a supplier offers it.
It depends on the supplier. Wolf loads one tile size per 20ft and allows three to four designs in that size, so a range with several sizes needs one container per size. Weight limits still apply, so agree the loading plan with any supplier before ordering.
Tell us the designs and finishes you want to see and Wolf will send a piece of each tile, so you can judge the quality and finish before you plan your first container.
