If you’re a porcelain tile distributor in Germany, you’ve probably noticed your orders changing shape. Fewer big project drops. More 40 m² orders for a bathroom, kitchen refits, a ground floor in a 1970s house that finally got sold.
Short answer: the best porcelain tiles to stock in Germany in 2026 are 300×300, 600×600 and 600×1200, held deep, because those are the sizes renovation work keeps asking for. Keep 800×1600, 1000×1000 and 1200×1200 for gut renovations, and order premium slabs to project. Whatever you stock, keep a few boxes of every shade lot so you can match last season’s order.
The numbers back that up. The Greyfield Index 2026 puts around 44% of German building activity (permits and completions, counted by number of buildings) in existing buildings. In five federal states (Bremen, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland and Thuringia) work on existing buildings has already overtaken new buildings. Nationally, new build is still the bigger half at about 56%, and Greyfield expects the two to level out in 2028.
For tile, the shift looks even bigger. Mordor Intelligence estimates that renovation and replacement made up about 61% of German ceramic tile sales in 2025, and it names federal refurbishment programmes (BEG and KfW) as one of the demand drivers. New-build permits are recovering from a low base rather than collapsing: Destatis counted 126,300 homes permitted in the first half of 2026, 15.1% more than a year earlier, but well short of the 182,800 permitted in the first half of 2016.
So the question for 2026 is what sells when this much of the work, and by one estimate most tile demand, sits in buildings that already exist.
Our compliance checklist for Germany covers why German contractors check paperwork so hard. This guide is the stocking side: what to hold, in what depth, and how to keep it matchable.
Wolf makes 11 sizes across three tiers: Standard, Large Format and Premium Slab. In a renovation-led market you won’t stock them evenly.
The workhorses are 300×300, 600×600 and 600×1200. These are the porcelain tile sizes Germany’s renovation work keeps asking for. 300×300 goes into older bathrooms and utility rooms where the contractor is matching the scale of what’s already there. 600×600 is the all-rounder for hallways, kitchens and replacement floors. 600×1200 is what people choose when they’re modernising a room and want it to look properly redone.
Then there’s the upper end. Large format porcelain tiles in Germany (800×1600, 1000×1000, 1200×1200) sell into gut renovations and conversions, where the floor is stripped back to screed and nothing old needs matching. Premium slabs (1200×1800, 1200×2400 and 1600×3200mm) are for feature walls, kitchen islands and high-end rebuilds. You’ll sell fewer of them, but they typically carry the best margin in your range.
You can see the formats in our 600×1200 collection and 1200×1200 collection, or browse the full collection range page.

The top two rows are what you never want to run out of. The bottom row you can order to project.
This is where Germany differs from a market built on new-build volume.
Picture a developer taking 2,000 m² of one 600×600 for a block of flats. You can plan a container around that single order.
Renovation orders arrive in pieces. Say one contractor needs 35 m² for a bathroom this week, another needs 90 m² for a ground floor next month, and the first one comes back in spring because the same client wants the hallway done to match.
That last order is the one that matters. In renovation, people constantly ask for “the same tile as last time.” A second phase, an extension, a damaged section replaced after a leak. If you can’t match it, the contractor goes elsewhere, and in Germany they may also have a liability problem on their hands (we explain why in our compliance checklist for Germany).
So plan your range differently:
Go wider and shallower. You need more designs available in your core sizes, each held in smaller quantities. A huge stock of one SKU is a bet on a type of order that’s now less common.
Keep your core SKUs topped up all the time. The standard sizes in your best-selling neutrals should never hit zero. Set a reorder point and stick to it, so you’re not caught out when a contractor calls.
Track shade lots, and keep a little of each one. When a new shade lot arrives, hold back a few boxes of the previous one for matching work. Note which lot went to which customer. That record is what lets you say yes when the spring call comes.
If you’re planning a mixed range in one shipment, our container loading guide shows how different sizes load.
→ With Wolf: we work to one shade standard across production runs, and every box carries its shade and calibre code. When you reorder, we can match against your existing lot, or tell you before it ships if a new run won’t match, so the contractor never discovers it on site.
In our read, German taste tends to be understated: matte finishes, quiet colours and formats that make a room feel calmer. Three finishes do most of the work. For refits next to an existing floor, lean on concrete-effect and wood-look. Save Statuario for stripped-back rebuilds and slabs.
Concrete-effect is the steady seller. It suits converted lofts, offices turned into flats, and kitchens where the owner wants something modern but neutral. Hold warm greys and greige alongside the cooler greys.
Marble-look Statuario is the premium line. In a large format or slab it goes into rebuilt bathrooms and kitchen feature walls. It usually carries your best margin, but it only sells if you have it in the bigger sizes.
Wood-look porcelain suits living areas, including rooms with underfloor heating. It gives the look of timber without the worry about heat and moisture.
For a neighbouring market, see what’s selling in Poland in 2026. Our Belgium stocking guide covers how the same finishes split across rebuild and refit jobs.
→ With Wolf: all three finish families stay in the range order after order, so a look you build a customer base around doesn’t vanish from the catalogue next season.

Renovation doesn’t stop at the back door. Terraces get relaid and balconies get redone when a flat is modernised, often as part of the same job.
Germany has proper winters, so anything going outside has to be a frost-resistant grade with a slip rating suited to wet outdoor use. Indoor renovation lines don’t need that spec. Keep the two clearly separate in your range so nobody sells an indoor tile onto a balcony. The full set of standards is in our Croatian importer’s porcelain compliance checklist.
All of this depends on one thing: your supplier can repeat an order.
In a new-build market, a supplier who ships one good container is enough. In a renovation market you’re going back to them every few weeks, and part of what you’re buying is the ability to match last month’s delivery. It’s also what keeps your contractor customers covered if something goes wrong later.
Before you commit, ask any Morbi supplier how they handle a reorder of the same SKU three months later. What’s their shade tolerance between runs? Will they tell you in advance if a lot doesn’t match? Can they supply your core sizes on a regular cycle instead of one big drop? A vague answer to any of those is a warning sign.
You can see what we make and ship on our Wolf export capability page. If you’re pricing the range, start with Wolf’s live Germany import/cost post.
Renovation is already a big share of German building activity, according to the Greyfield Index. For a tile distributor that means steady standard sizes, upgrade large formats, a small premium line, and finishes that stay in the catalogue. Above all, it means stock you can match when the same customer calls back.
Wolf makes all three tiers in one factory to one shade standard, with the batch and shade records on every box that German contractors expect. If you’re still getting the paperwork in order, start with our compliance checklist for Germany.

Searching in German for Feinsteinzeugfliesen Lagerbestand Deutschland (porcelain tile stock for Germany)? This guide covers what to hold and how deep.
Standard sizes (300×300, 600×600mm) for renovation replacement, large formats (600×1200, 1200×1200mm) for modernised interiors, and marble-look and concrete-effect finishes. Renovation and replacement account for an estimated 61% of German ceramic tile sales (Mordor Intelligence), and existing buildings account for around 44% of building activity (Greyfield Index 2026).
Three tiers: standard sizes (300×300, 300×600, 600×600, 800×800mm) for volume renovation work, large formats (600×1200, 800×1600, 1000×1000, 1200×1200mm) for modern interiors, and premium slabs (1200×1800, 1200×2400, 1600×3200mm) for feature and highest-margin work.
Not yet overall, but it is close. The Greyfield Index 2026 puts around 44% of German building activity in existing buildings, against about 56% in new buildings, with parity expected in 2028. In five federal states (Bremen, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saarland and Thuringia) existing-building work already exceeds new build.
Yes, when specified correctly. Outdoor and terrace applications should use a frost-resistant, slip-rated grade, while indoor renovation lines don't need the same specification.
