Here’s a question that comes up on almost every first order: how many porcelain tiles per container from India can you actually load?
It isn’t as simple as it looks. The answer shifts depending on tile size, thickness, how pallets are arranged, and whether you hit a weight ceiling before a volume ceiling. Get this wrong and you’re either under-ordering or paying freight on a container that wasn’t optimised.
For European procurement teams, this is worth getting right before you finalise quantities.

Whether you load 900 sqm or 1,300 sqm into a 20ft container, the freight invoice looks roughly the same. The difference shows up when you divide those freight charges across the tile you actually received. In our experience, poor loading efficiency hits margins harder than most buyers expect, and it’s one of the first things worth reviewing when calculating the cost of importing tiles.
Efficient loading just needs to be planned before the container reaches the warehouse floor, because that’s where most of the control sits. Most established Morbi exporters already have standard pallet configurations per tile format for container loading. What they need from you is covered in the checklist further below.
Porcelain is dense. For many standard formats, you’ll hit the weight limit of a container well before you run out of floor space. That changes the math compared to lighter cargo.

Most tile buyers in Europe order 20ft containers regardless of quantity or tile size. Even for large format porcelain like 800x1600mm or 1200x1200mm, the preference is to split bigger orders across two or three 20ft containers rather than move to a 40ft.
The reason is cost. Two 20ft containers typically work out more price-efficient than one 40ft, and they give more flexibility for split deliveries or separate project allocations.
For buyers placing focused orders on one or two tile sizes, a 20ft container tiles shipment is almost always the right starting point.
The only situation where a 40ft container becomes necessary is when ordering large slab formats: 1200x2400mm & 1600x3200mm. These tiles are physically too large to load into a 20ft container. In that case, a 40ft is required because of size, not volume.

Note on Large Format Tiles
The 20ft figures above might surprise you. Large format tiles like 800x1600mm and 1200x1800mm still load between 1,244 and 1,296 sqm per 20ft container, which is not far off smaller formats. That’s because each box covers more area, so fewer boxes still add up to strong sqm totals.
Where large format orders shift to a 40ft is purely about physical size. Slabs like 1200x2400mm and 1600x2300mm simply don’t fit in a 20ft container. For everything else, a 20ft handles it.
600x1200mm porcelain tiles load 1,020 boxes and 1,468 sqm per 20ft and remain one of the most consistently ordered formats for European buyers.

Single-product containers are rare for established distributors. Most mixed loads ship in a 20ft container. The flexibility to combine formats doesn’t require moving to a larger box. Most European buyers are ordering across multiple collections at once, residential flooring in one size, commercial projects in another, premium wall applications in a third.
Take a typical Dutch buyer: they might need 600x1200mm stone-look tiles for a housing development, 1200x1200mm polished tiles for a retail fit-out, and 800x1600mm slabs for a high-end residential developer.
Mixed loading means one container, one freight invoice. But it’s not simply a case of filling space wherever it exists. Heavier large-format tiles need to sit low on the container floor. Lighter formats stack within their pallet configurations. Overall weight distribution has to stay balanced across the container’s length to keep everything stable across the full 40-55 day voyage to European ports.
The loading plan has to be worked out before production runs, not after. If pallet quantities shift during manufacturing, the whole arrangement may need adjusting. These are vessel transit times only. A 45-day transit doesn’t mean tiles arrive 45 days after you place an order. Factor in 2-3 weeks of production lead time and 3-5 days of port handling at destination and you’re typically looking at 12-14 weeks from order confirmation to warehouse receipt. If you’re working to a fixed project handover date, build a buffer into your production schedule rather than your shipping estimate.
